The XS-09 is the Republic's new standard-issue marksman weapon. While long-range shots off platforms such as the SR4 blaster are certainly capable, the Republic found itself lacking a dedicated sniper's weapon. Thus, the XS-09 was commissioned to fill the gap. A standard sniping platform, the XS-09 has an interchangeable scope as need be to suit the mission - thermal, infrared, nightvision, standard optics - and the option to change grips to suit different physiologies. It excels in range and stopping power but is not rapid fire, like many modern laser sniper rifles are; just as suited to punching through light vehicle armour as it is an organic target, it requires skill and precision to use effectively, given that its first and likely only shot against a target must count.
