Description -
The Type J0 Field Utility Droid is a 5th-degree droid produced by Lanas Automation Laboratories, a Miln firm specializing in robotic technology. Primarily outfitted as survey droids, these machines are often used by Miln scouts during surface exploration of new planets; the largest single operator of Type J0s is the Miln Astrogational Corps, with at least one droid assigned to every hyperspace-capable ship in its fleet.

At 1 meters in height and weighing in at 200 kilograms, the Type J0 is designed to stand up to whatever hardships Wild Space and the rest of the Galaxy can throw at it. With a robust, ceramic enameled titanium hull and all major joints sealed against the elements with rubberized accordion covers, its internal systems are kept safe from moisture, grit, debris and extreme temperatures. Equipped with a full suite of scientific sensors and communication systems, as well as several useful tools, it can operate for decades without refueling on its sealed radioactive power source. Immensely strong, it can lift and throw an inert landspeeder, and can shrug off tremendous punishment, up to and including standard blaster rifle fire and light concussion grenades.
Aside from the ability to deliver contact electrical shocks through its casing, however, the J0 is unarmed, nor does it posses combat programming more sophisticated than simple brawling tactics. Meant to directly assist Miln scouts as a kind of walking scanner pack and multitool, it is normally capable of only limited autonomy, not itself possessing much more intelligence than the average binary loadlifter. Though able to understand spoken commands and respond vocally, it follows instructions given to it very literally, and speaks in a stilted, electronic monotone. Independent operation is possible with careful prior instruction, and usually takes the form of pre-set search patterns during planetary surveys; the droid can also be posted as a sentry, or put to work moving cargo or setting up equipment. Multiple J0s can cooperate with one-another in performing more complex tasks.
Of note, a typical J0 is equipped with several medical-grade sensor systems, which it can use to scan and diagnose injuries and illnesses in Miln and similar species. It is not capable of carrying out any but the most basic non-invasive treatments, however. The droid is also equipped with a small moisture vaporator, which it can use to condense drinkable water out of most atmospheres, as well as a small cookslot for preparing simple meals.
Upon reaching the limit of its specific instructions, a J0 will typically stop moving and await new ones, unless provided with a default programmed behavior such as returning to base.
Like most droids, J0s are capable of developing distinct personalities and patterns of behavior over the course of their operational life. This information, in addition to other data, is backed up in a shielded memory cassette which can be removed and swapped between droids of the same model, effectively transferring their memories, skills and personality to a new body. J0s can function without this cassette, but are deprived of all long-term memory and can only follow very simple instructions, such as "walk forward" and "stop".

While not especially sophisticated compared to its contemporaries, the Type J0 Field Utility Droid is a rugged and reliable assistant and companion to many Miln scouts out exploring the wider Galaxy.
