Description: The Plasma Energy Torpedo (PET) is a variation of the standard energy torpedo that uses plasma similar to that found in the T-33 Plasma torpedo, a shieldbuster weapon from the time of the New Republic. Galactic Republic engineers developed the PET by using plasma similar to the one found in the T-33 and bottling and firing it using traditional energy torpedo launcher technology. The derivative weapon shares the same strengths and weaknesses as its predecessors.

Like traditional energy torpedo launchers, the PET forms a magnetic bottle made out of high energy particles which is slowly filled with plasma. Once the magnetic bottle is full, the PET launcher essentially “uncorks” the bottle, leaving an opening through which a small jet of plasma can escape, which then propels the torpedo forward. This magnetic sheath lasts only a minute before it will fall apart, allowing the remaining plasma to harmlessly dissipate if it does not hit a target (a definite possibility given that the torpedo has no guidance system). Thankfully, like the canon energy torpedo, the PET can cover a vast amount of distance during this time because of its high velocity. During this brief period of flight, the PET appears to be a blob of swirling energy and gases and is virtually indistinguishable from a normal energy torpedo.

Once it hits a target, it's difference from a normal energy torpedo becomes quite clear. The ionized gases previously contained in the magnetic sheath collide with a ship's shields, and thus produce a powerful amount of radiation which is unusually effective in taking down a ship's shields. But like all shieldbuster torpedoes, the PET is rather ineffective against hull plating. Against an unshielded hull, the plasma will quickly expand as a roiling ball of super-heated gas and then just as quickly dissipate into its surroundings; it may burn or even melt thin layers of the hull, but it is an incredibly inefficient compared to conventional turbolasers, concussion missiles, and most other weapons.

The Galactic Republic produces two versions of this weapon, a light and a heavy version. They both take up the same amount of space on a ship as standard and heavy warhead launcher respectively. While the launchers can only be used by ships of the Galactic Republic, several Republic-allied manufacturers have full access to the plans to produce their own so that they can be produced at the same facilities that are building Republic ships for maximum industrial efficiency.
