Intent: To create a method for vehicles to protect themselves from infantry and also potentially protect them from unwanted attention. This tech item exists in reality as well as the components exist in canon, this is to codify and produce an item for sale.
Development Thread: If needed.
Manufacturer: Firemane Industries and Technology
Model: ST-VH-01
Affiliation: SSC, Tygaran Alliance, Open Market | Firemane Industries & Technology & closed market to approved buyers only.
Modularity: Grenade payload can be swapped out.
Production: Mass Produced
Material: Durasteel, electronics, grenades.
Classification: Grenade launcher
Size: Vehicle mounted
Length: 50cm
Weight: Launcher about 30kg
Ammunition Type: Grenades
Ammunition Capacity: Each pod can hold 12 grenades. Most vehicles have two mounted, larger ones more.
Effective Range: 45 metres.
Rate of Fire: Automatic.
Special Features:
  • Can load 12 grenades per pod. These can be fired all at once, one at a time, or any combination thereof.
  • Can hold a variety of grenade types (covered in description).
  • Grenades are unguided, aim is controlled by elevation.

Strengths:
  • Bombardment. The Striker can unleash a hail of grenades capable of blanketing an area in whatever nasties it is loaded with.
  • Tactical. Able to choose which grenades are fired when, the Striker can unleash its payload quickly and tactically.
  • No Danger. Even if the launcher were to be hit, the vehicle would only be slightly affected at worst. The Striker never carries weapons capable of wrecking its own vehicle.
  • Triggered. The grenades have a short fuse and are also set to explode once launched on any impact, including telekinesis, the ground, etc.
Weaknesses:
  • Aimless. Though the elevation can determine range somewhat the projectiles are unguided and are not intended for precision attacks, but for covering an area.
  • Low Penetration. Though it’s great they can’t destroy their own vehicle, the Striker cannot penetrate other vehicles or very heavy armour.
  • Reload. It takes time to reload the pods, either by swapping it out fully or manually reloading with grenades. This cannot be done in combat.

Description:

When Firemane came to constructing vehicles the problem of providing a utility weapon and device came up. A solution was to place grenade launcher pods on the outside of the hull or turret. These could provide good suppressive and utility support for the vehicle without exposing a gunner and also leaving the main weapons free to engage other targets.

In the main, the Striker is a pod of 12 barrels arranged in a 4-4-4 grouping. These can carry a variety of grenades as detailed below. The Striker is fired by the gunner/driver (depending on if said vehicle has a gunner) who controls the elevation and which grenades are fired. The elevation and traverse of the pods is quite good, especially if mounted on a turret. The pods can elevate from 0 to 80 degrees, allowing it to drop the grenades at any range from 5 metres to 50 metres. The pods can also traverse rapidly, allowing a volley to swiftly blanket an area with full effect.

The Striker can be loaded with the following grenades:
  • Fragmentation – The most usual. This is especially effective against infantry and other soft targets.
  • Smoke – This provides a dense fog of smoke to hide the vehicle from sight.
  • Ion – Useful against droids and also against other electronic devices.
  • Cryoban – Good for rapidly lowering the temperature, also for attacking droids or persons not prepare for cold conditions.
  • Stun – Good in situations where one needed the targets taken alive.
  • Gas – A variety of gas types can be used here, from knockout to poison.
  • Cluster – For even more area of effect and collateral damage, cluster grenades can provide more yet less deadly blasts.

The size and impact of these grenades is enhanced compared with the handheld versions. Usually a vehicle will load 6-8 frag grenades into each pod and reserve the remainder mainly for smoke, ion or stun depending on the situation.

Thermal detonators cannot be loaded.

By itself the Striker is not especially exciting, but it provides useful support for vehicles and gives them a better variety of utility applications and anti-infantry support as well.
