Intent: A minor addition to exploration ships; a useful whatnot for disaster relief and impoverished populations.
Development Thread: No
Manufacturer: Akure Executive Interstellar/Iron Crown Enterprises
Model: QQ-1453-DR1 SFRC
Affiliation: Open market
Modularity: Yes; aftermarket modules may permit the SFRC's selectivity function to divert both organic and inorganic material to extruders capable of producing fairly simple objects, or more complex objects part by part. Notably, some after-market modules allow for the creation of cloth in simple shapes, such as shipsuits and other basic clothes, tents, bedrolls, etc. The cloth is not especially comfortable but not especially irritating.
Production: Mass-produced
Material: Eight tons of electronics (same weight as a standard solid fuel converter)
Description: The SFRC is a refinement and extrapolation of classic solid fuel converter technology, which allowed tramp freighter pilots to turn various kinds of matter, including non-combustibles, into usable power. Standard SFC technology could derive usable power from five tons of water, plastics, solid waste, etc., or one ton of much denser materials including metals. The SFRC retains that functionality, with an added selectivity function. Water, organic matter and other suitable substances (dirt, solid waste, wood) can either be converted to fuel cell power, or can be thoroughly reprocessed at a microscopic level. The end result is food.

The SFRC, obeying the law of conservation of mass, can produce moderately nourishing food in brick or paste form. A refillable vitamin module injects the recommended daily intake of the vitamins and minerals necessary for humanoid survival. The SFRC can be tuned for other species' physiologies, and variant vitamin modules are available. Each SFRC's dispensary unit, containing nozzles for paste (and flavored or unflavored water; carbonation modules available) and outlet flaps for brick, can adjust flavor between a double handful of presets which also use refillable modules. The SFRC is fully capable of filling a partitioned tray with multiple kinds of tasteful and nutritious glop. The SFRC can even run self-powered, converting 12-18% of its intake material into the power to sustain its own operation.

The manufacturers do not recommend using sentient biomass as the intake material. No technical problems result, as the SFRC is fully capable of transforming many kinds of matter into food, but psychological consequences can cause complications.

Biotoxins, diseases, chemical weapons, etc. are thoroughly neutralized by the SFRC if included in the intake material. The SFRC is capable of being used as a water purifier.
