Pendant of the Singing Mountain

Somewhere around 10 aby..
The old man

It all started with a lonely miner, with a fool’s hope of striking it rich on the colony of Goluud Minor. The man worked from sun up to sun down, striking away at the raw earth, trying his hardest to find something that would prove to be the fruits of his labors. Day after day, he would walk the lonely path to the mining facility, check-in, get his equipment and go down into the lonely abyss to mine away again. When the day was done, he would wander the same beaten path back to his home. He once had a wife and children, but they passed away in a violent storm that Goluud Minor was known for. He once had friends, but they were long since gone. He was a part of a rag-tag band of misfit miners who decided to stick around on this facility in hopes of mining out what blue crusted orbs of earth was left on his forsaken planet. He once had memories of cool fresh air against his face from his homeworld on Corellia, the smell of the sweet sea near the coastal city of Tyrena. The feel of the golden sand between his toes. Memories that were faded like a photograph left out in the sun for too long.

He once had more than what he had become now. He had become a hollow man, a man who marched to the beat of a set rhythm in hopes of getting lucky and striking it rich. The sun would rise, and so would he. He would eat the terrible rations that the Republic was kind enough to send to them, even if they had gotten stale by the time they reached the outpost. He would pack some leftover food from the night before and hit that well beaten path. Day in and day out. There was hope in his heart, hope he could change his life. Hope he could take the bodies of his family even though they had been dead for so long and give them a better place to be buried. Hope that he would once again be able to see the beautiful beaches of Tyrena and the smell of the wind blowing through the Corellian plains.

It would seem, that soon lady luck would smile on this old miner and the hope to which he held onto for so long would prove to have been worth it…

It would be like any other day, a day to which the man never forgot. He could remember catching a glimpse of that blue crusted piece of earth when he hit it with his mining pick. He remembered the feeling of his heart rapidly beating, his head aching from the sudden rise in blood pressure. He whipped out his excavation scanner. He remembered the sensation of his heart dropping and his mouth opening as he saw the size of the piece of sapphire behind it. It was one of a kind, it was a pure form of sapphire. Something to be heard of, something worth so much no doubt. The man remembered getting so excited he almost lost his light and his bearing of the precious stone. The process of extracting the gem took a few hours, a bit past the work day but when it was done, he sat in awe of the jewel as it laid in his lap. It was as big as his hand and gleaned a pure blue that he couldn’t quite describe.

A few tears were shed, tears that dropped onto the stone and were quickly wiped away as he stuffed it away into his satchel. The man, who clung to hope, had something to be happy with, finally. His dreams had come true and he was going home. As he fell asleep that night, the old man dreamt of all the possibilities of what the stone would bring him, one hundred thousand credits, two hundred, heck maybe even half a million. The next morning, he didn’t take that beaten path, he didn’t go to that abyss of a mining operation where he spent countless years. No, he went to the mining station where he only went on certain days to get supplies.

There he met a broker, a broker he swore he would one day meet. The man was from somewhere off-world, he couldn’t remember the name exactly. He appeared to be a clean shaven man and well mannered. He also claimed to have a lot of money and was well into gems and rare jewels. The old man discussed what he wanted for the stone and the broker just smiled and asked to take a look. As the broker examined the jewel, the old man began to get nervous, afraid there might be a flaw or some fracture which would decrease the value. Instead the broker murmured and whispered to his associates, and one of the associates approached the old man, making him even more nervous. The associate produced a figure and the old man’s eyes went wide, his mouth opening and his head nodding in agreement. The old man couldn’t believe he was going to get that much for such a stone.

As the old man and the broke exchanged credits and the gem, he got the courage to ask. “Are ye gunna name it?” he said in a nervous voice. The broker would smile and nod as he held the stone within his black gloved hand. “We’re calling this the Star Sapphire. You have quite a find, please let us know if you discover any other gems of this nature.” The man said before he disappeared out of the station with his several associates in tow. The broker merely smiled as he approached his shuttle, holding the gem tightly in his hand. A gem of this purity would fetch an even better dollar once it was processed and cleaned. Even broken down.

As the broker and his associates entered the shuttle, the small station exploded in a fiery ball, leaving behind no witnesses and nothing but debris and strewn bodies. The old man, who had waited so long, finally had hit his luck but it was all on greed. See, no one thought the old man to be greedy, keeping his family here even though many had long since moved on. Greedy enough to keep at it, day in and day out, regardless of whatever he had to sacrifice. Greed in the end did not pay out well for the old man. It ended up being his demise. In the end, he did go home, however. The Republic came and cleaned up the mess, taking the bodies of him and his family and respectfully burying them on Corellia, per the wishes of the estate to which he left behind.

It isn’t known what happened to the broker. Some say that Ember Rekali got ahold of him and dealt him a swift hand of justice and took the Star Sapphire for himself and in turn gave it to his daughter, Aaralyn Rekali as a present. Some say the broker was nothing more than a man of business, who in turn took the stone, broke it down and purified it and how it came into the Rekali family hands was just by coincidence. There are others who say that the broker was hired by Ember Rekali to seek out one of the rarest stone in the Galaxy for his youngest child as a gift of celebration to add to the family heirloom, something she would pass down to children of her own. No one really knows who the broker was or how he was connected to the Rekali family. All that is known is that the Star Sapphire was delicately placed into the center jewel of the Pendant of the Singing Mountain, and the smaller stones surrounding the heirloom.

And there it would remain...

800 years later...

The rarest, pure form of sapphire known to the Galaxy as the Star Sapphire...

Now, a Rekali family heirloom.
