One Sith Naval Organization

Grand Admiral, First Order Central Command
One Sith Naval Organization

The Sith navy is nominally headed by a Grand Admiral, appointed by the Dark Council. This is a heavily political position, focused on acting as a liason between the existing ‘secular’ naval organization and the growing Sith bureaucracy. The current supreme commander is Grand Admiral Arasene Vol, a former Sith Empire officer with extensive naval experience. She has a respectable track record and is generally acknowledged as competent, but she is also acutely aware of the vulnerability of her position and has been widely criticized (behind closed doors) as being too complacent with regards to Sith interference in the Navy.

A second Grand Admiral holds the slightly junior position of ‘Chief of Naval Operations” and is more involved in the day to day running of things. The current CNO is Grand Admiral Kirun Paolus, a Republic Defector who’s reputation is dubious at best but is considered politically ‘safe’ by Vol.

Then you have the five sector fleets, each commanded by a Fleet Admiral. These are known by their colorful monikers 1st Fleet, 2nd Fleet, 3rd Fleet, etc (I am way too un-clever to come with gnarly Sector Command names like in canon). A sector fleet is an administrative organization, it includes all the ships, bases, installations, space stations, and etc. that belong to the Navy in that sector. As with the above, these are very political positions that depend a great deal on Sith favor.

Actual operational organization is done on several levels. First, every system is required to have a System Defense Fleet. This can range from a large fully military unit composed of ships drawn from across the sector (as at Coruscant or Anaxes) all the way to whatever handful of patrol boats the planet can put together. Commands of these SDF’s range from Captains all the way up to full Admirals (Commander, Coruscant Defense Fleet is a very prestigious post and a stepping stone to Fleet Admiral).

Second is each Battleforce (or properly, Battleforce 1st Fleet, and so on). This is a normally administrative unit which is made up of every warship present in that sector. As ships move about, they check in and out of whichever Battleforce they fall under. Typically commanded by a full Admiral, a Battleforce would only deploy in force in very extreme cases. It should be noted that the Immortals are all Battleforce, and thus Sector assets, and managed at a much higher level than most ships.

The main operational unit of a sector is the Battlegroup. Typically commanded by a Vice Admiral, a Battlegroup is a relatively permanent command capable of unsupported operations beyond friendly borders. Generally speaking, you’re talking between 20km-50km worth of ships here.

The most common operational unit is the Strike Group, often known simply as a “Fleet.” Similar to a Battlegroup a Fleet is capable of unsupported operations, but unlike a Battlegroup it is not tied so closely to a sector. Fleets range widely between Sith space, enforcing the will of the Dark Lord, the Sith, the various sector governors, and the ambitions of their own commanders. A Fleet typically ranges between 10km-20km.

The smallest general form of organization is the Squadron or Task Force. Both are any assemblage of ships for a mission. That can range from Deep Space Patrol to Hyperlane Denial, to System Raiding, to Planetary Sieges, and so on. There are no hard numbers of number or size of ships, but you’re talking at least three ships and probably less than 10km total, at which point you may as well just call it a fleet.

Moving Forward: This is the product of several days boredom and is heavily based on real-world USN organization. It is highly unlikely to be considered interesting to anyone else, as far as I’m concerned, but I wanted to post it anyway.
This is as things stand prior to the purge. I’ll rewrite and edit this to accommodate a Fleetcom and more independent organization of things after we resolve that thread. Oh right, it’s also absolutely subject to approval/modification/denial and so on.

Grand Admiral, First Order Central Command
REORGANIZED FLEETCOM STRUCTURE:

The reorganized Sith Navy has been formed to directly confront the issues that plagued the old system. To a certain extent, this was solved simply by removing much of the old guard and putting competent leadership at the helm, but some re-structuring was necessary as well.

The old Admiralty has been wiped out, replaced with a central authority, Fleet Command (or FLEETCOM). This consists of one Grand Admiral, holding the position of Supreme Commander, and four Fleet Admirals. These make up the FLEETCOM Staff, and hold overall strategic control of the One Sith Navy.

The myriad of organizational units with sometimes vague hierarchies of command have been removed. Besides the Sector Fleets (which again, exist for administrative purposes only) there are only 'fleets' of varying sizes. Every fleet is commanded by a Commodore or above and is fully self-sufficient. These units are also known as Battlegroup, Squadron, Strike Group, etc., depending on the established tradition and commander's preference.

Fleet commanders are expected and encouraged to operate with initiative and skill, and conduct operations without direct support from FLEETCOM. Success means more authority and more responsibility, and failure typically brings it's own reward. The culture encouraged is thus one that can be remarkably vicious, designed to weed out the weak and timid and advance only the best and brightest. Or at least the most cuttthroat.

Planetary defense fleets have been removed from the control of FLEETCOM and are are the jurisdiction of Planetary Governors, to remove the political incentive for System Defense Fleet Commander billets. Further, most have been heavily pared down, with the larger ships distributed to the fleets, to encourage the idea that the Sith are an offensive Navy, always on the attack. When necessary, fleets are ordered to the defense of a system by FLEETCOM (or they've already arrived on their own command).

All candidates for advancement to Rear Admiral and above must be fully qualified for the position and are judged by the FLEETCOM staff. Merit is the primary qualification, and while the Sith Hierarchy ultimately has veto authority on all promotions to flag rank, the simple yay or nay of a Sith Lord is no longer an advantage or impediment.
