the Traits

Attire: Nova has two sides. First and most frequent is the woman who gets her hands dirty. Jumpsuits or other comfortable and utilitarian garb form the basis of Nova's wardrobe. These articles are never too baggy as to get caught on sharp edges or in sliding panels but not so form-fitting as to lack on padding, pockets, and insulation. The last touches are firm, mid-shin length boots, plenty of straps and belts to carry any other tool she might need while working on her ship, and healthy dollops of grease and grime just about everywhere. Then there's the Nova who enjoys a night off. This doesn't happen all that much, but as often as she can spare a free night portside, Nova enjoys putting in an effort for herself. Though far from trying to be trendy or stylish, she has a number of blouse/skirt combinations and dresses to more casual street-wear. Some lounge-wear fills out the rest of her closet. She is known to change her hair and eye color as the mood strikes her. Most importantly though, is the confidence with which she wears each style and the ease of switching between them. Nova is just as at home in her work gear as she is in pumps.

Personality: Adventurous to the point of wanderlust. Creative to the point of restlessness. Chatty but fiercely independent. Strong sense of family to the point of being loyal, compassionate, and dutiful to those deemed family members. Very reactive to what is happening around her to the point where her mood can swing greatly depending on her environment. Head-strong.

the Legend

Biography: Nova was born to spacer parents aboard their ship and home, Oasis. The vessel had been passed down through the Casamyr family generation by generation until finally it was bequeathed to Nova's mother, Sola Casamyr. Sola met Aydin at a young age when they began crewing ships together. Their relationship grew slowly, but by the time Sola inherited Oasis, they were partners in all things. Nova was born a few years later with the given name Ordin, a portmanteau of her father's given and family name, and taking the Casamyr family name.

Oasis made a large playground for young Nova to run around and get into trouble. While before they had a child, Sola and Aydin could have run the ship on their own with the help of a pair of astromechs. After having a baby, that became far more difficult. The freighter, though, had plenty of space for additional crewmates. Sabu Ialbo was the first mate that Sola and Aydin recruited. A young Mon Cal woman, Sabu was rather green but she took a shine to Oasis, her innate spacer abilities inherent in her Mon Calamari DNA. And young Nova took a shine to Sabu. At the age of 2, Nova was a walker and a talker. No hiding spot was left unadorned by trinkets. No guests were left wanting for conversation. Sabu was a great listener, and did as much babysitting as she did crewing. The four of them living together on the ship for long hauls, jobs and even stays at unfamiliar ports, Sabu quickly became part of the family. Nova affectionately named the Mon Cal "Blub" and the name stuck. This started a trend of nicknaming every major person or object in her life which continued into adulthood.

The benefit to working from a traveling home was that Nova got her education practically. Holos were unnecessary to develop a sense of adventure. Life was an adventure. Work was an adventure. There were always new people, new places, new things to do and learn. The downside was that Nova lacked a formal education. Sola tried to get Nova to sit still for reading and studying, but the fact was that there was always some task needing doing. So the attention that Sola and Aydin wanted for their child never had the time to bloom. In an attempt to find a solution, the Casamyr family added two more crew to Oasis. More crew meant less time for Sola and Aydin to spend working and more time raising the kid. But in reality, more crew meant more mouths to feed. More credits required more jobs. More jobs meant Nova continued on her practical training and neglected her formal education. The only real benefits were that more crew meant a wider breadth of jobs could be taken that would be too complicated for a crew of three and Nova, aged 7, had more ears to talk off.

Those ears belonged to a seasoned pair of hands, both of whom had worked for prior Casamyr Captains and were readily familiar with the ship and the family. Dovv Swasi was middle-aged for a Sullustan male and Rimad Shtaud was approaching elderly for a female Duros. Sola reached out to the pair in particular because they would be patient and understanding with the family vibe that Oasis currently was sporting due to a young child aboard. Nova, of course, saw the new crewmates as new family members and nicknames were dispensed accordingly: "Jolly" for Dovv's inimitable and easy laugh and "Egg" for Rimad's many hatchling children and grandchildren.

Nova would think back later in life and be truly thankful that she had been raised among such a supportive family group. She was never seeking for acceptance, or advice, or love. These were things freely given by those close to her.

Even from a young age, Nova could just tell something wasn't right. But rather than seek out meaning or understanding, the adventurous child spent time finding solutions for that disconcerting nag. At first, these solutions were expressed through Nova's hair styles, often long and flowing. Not satisfied the solutions expanded into clothing options more attributed to girls than boys. Growing older, and exploring these solutions liberally, the nag became persistent to a distressing degree. Though Nova was a generally happy child, fits of depression became more and more common in her young adolescent years. Nova's parents, unsure of what was wrong, brought young Nova to a pediatric psychologist they were lucky to barely afford. The doctor labelled Nova, then Ordin, as being gender variant. There were methods of transition described to the family on steps that they could take to resolve the feeling and bring Nova on whatever path brought her relief. Ever the explorer and in desperate need to understand the feelings of unease, the child of Sola and Aydin readily accepted and became Nova. After years of therapy tied directly to a combination of hormone treatments and surgical alterations, Nova accepted herself as being a female. And though not done exploring what that truly meant, she knew she was on the right path.

Eventually, as Nova got older and more capable of handling tasks independently, Sabu left the crew. After nearly fifteen years aboard Oasis, she had amassed enough capital to purchase a ship of her own. Sad to see her family start to go their separate ways, Nova made Sabu promise to stay in touch. Sabu did her one better by offering Nova a place on Sabu's crew whenever Nova was ready to leave the bubble. Nova learned, then, that she always needed room to grow, to have something greater to aspire, to never become complacent. A few years later, Nova finally felt ready enough to take Sabu up on her offer.

Over the next decade, Nova would hop from ship to ship, crewing wherever a job would take her. She let herself adventure, not knowing what the next day would bring, but always searching for excitement, or maybe something else, she wasn't sure. Despite being so far from home, she never missed a call from her parents, or Blub, Jolly, or Egg. After Nova departed from Oasis, Dovv wasn't far behind. Egg, approaching the twilight of her career, agreed to stay on with the Casamyr's until she finally decided to retire. The updates from her family only further ignited Nova's desire to explore, see everything that there was to be seen. Find whatever it was that Nova felt like she was missing.

So it came with fret and worry when Nova didn't hear from her parents and Egg one week. Then two. Jolly and Blub hadn't heard anything either. Then three, and everyone was on the hunt. Months of searching passed and Nova's dread became a cold stone in her gut. Then a call, at last, from Sabu. "Meet on Ord Mantell." Nova traversed the stars as fast as she could. There waiting for her in orbit were Oasis, docked by umbilical to Sabu's ship Everflowing Current. Greetings were dispensed with and straight to the bad news. A shielding error had caused a harmful dose of solar radiation to bathe the hull for long enough to give fatal doses to all aboard. The only surviving members of the crew were the astromech units, Revis and Blind. They had flown the ship to its nearest port but other internal damage had prevented interstellar communication. They had put the ship into lockdown until they received a familiar id code from Sabu's vessel. Sabu had performed a spacer's burial before Nova arrived, but a message recorded by the crew prior to their deaths remained unopened in the ship's log. Though not ready to say her final goodbye, the documentation was already prepared and stamped by Sola Casamyr. In the bitterest of notes, Oasis was registered to her daughter Nova.
