GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Planet Name: Mord'Rethar, the Sarcophagus World
  • Demonym: Mord'Retharian
  • Region: Unknown Regions
  • System Name: The Court of Bones
  • System Features:
Corp'rethar, the Corpse World: One of the two other habitable planets in the Court of Bones, Corp'rethar was a testing ground for Sith experimentation and housed the majority of their slave labor force in sprawling cyclopean metropoles that have since been ground to dust and ruin by whatever calamity befell the entire system thousands upon thousands of years ago. The only sounds that echoes across the barren landscape is the keening of the wind whistling through a dozen city-sized graveyards.
  • Aldur'thar, the Lord's Desolation: The capital of the Court of Bones, and seat of the Sith aristocracy that ruled this far flung outpost of the ancient Sith Empire. It is the epicenter of the destruction of the whole system, half of the planet gutted and left to slowly drift away as gravity continuously collapses around the dead world. Its core is likewise hollowed out, and the magnificent spires that once housed the most powerful magicians of the ancient era are left to rot and decay to nothingness.
  • Naz'anak, the Blackened Star: The star at the center of the Court of Bones is a ruined husk, the nucleus of a once shining beacon that has long since been drained of its energy to fuel the death of millions.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
  • Gravity: Standard
  • Climate:
    Desolate
  • Mountainous

[*]Primary Terrain:
  • Canyons
  • Valleys
  • Mountain Ranges

[*]Major Locations:
  • The Library-Temple of Mord'Rethar: A vast library complex at the center of a sprawling desolate metropolis, once a vast reservoir of Sith knowledge and history until it was reduced to ruin and the vast quantity of its knowledge lost to time. Much of the sublevels still exist and are home to the descendents of the survivors of an ancient cataclysm.
  • Malykriss, the Dark Hold: A monolithic castle ruled by the ancient Sith that, much like everything else on Mord'Rethar, was annihilated and reduced to rubble. The echoes of its evil still persist, and the wailing spirits of the dead seem to haunt its dilapidated halls.
  • The Shadow Vault: The ancient catacombs running beneath the ruined Sith cities are home to many of the Sith descendents who had survived the annihilation of their civilization, leading to evolution decay after thousands of years of being trapped beneath the dead earth. The subterranean labyrinth sprawls for kilometers upon kilometers, and is constantly in a state of war between warbands hungering for the last scraps of habitable land within those gloomy depths. These primitive wretches have only survived for so long thanks to the vault's security systems, which automatically sealed every entrance and exit while simultaneously providing an artificial environment capable of supporting life indefinitely so long as the oxygen recyclers are neither damaged nor destroyed. The Vault is also equipped with artificial light and several arboretums and gardens capable of supporting a limited population, which has led to violent war over control of these regions of the Vault.

FORCE NEXUS
  • Size: Planet-wide Dark Side Nexus.
  • Effect: The overwhelming amount of death and destruction wrought upon Mord'Rethar has left the planet devoid of life and natural sounds save for the keening of the stale winds whipping through the empty valleys and ruined cities. The thorough saturation of the Dark Side of the Force caused the planet's atmosphere to cool to a frigid chill, and any Dark Siders that visit the world will find their insidious powers bolstered while those attuned to the Light will be severely weakened. The nexus' effect only extends as far as the planet's upper atmosphere, with the positive/negative symptoms dissipating in previously affected individuals upon leaving the atmosphere. Light Siders can mitigate the negative effects of the Dark Side nexus with powerful talismans, wards, or a group's combined power to stave off the Dark Side's necrotic touch.
  • Intent: The death of several million would logically create a Dark Side nexus that permeates the entire planet.
POPULATION

[*]Various slave races

[*]Population: Minimally Populated
[*]Demographics:
  • 90% Sith & Sith Sub-Species
  • 10% Slave Species

[*]Primary Languages:

[*]Culture: Established during the Golden Age of the Sith, the Court of Bones was not dissimilar from the Empire from which it was spawned. The whole system was ruled by a haunty aristocracy of red-skinned Sith warlords who had thrust further beyond Naga Sadow's incursion against the Republic, plunging deep into the unknown despite the immense risk. With them they brought a great wealth of culture and decorated the empty worlds they found with the magnificence of the Sith Empire, massive pyramids, sprawling temple structures, and various edifices to their vanity. They enslaved thousands of non-Sith in the process of creating these monstrous works, the bodies of slain slaves often comprising the mortar that held the stone structures together.
All of it was wiped out long after Naga Sadow's defeat and the devastation of the Sith Worlds, not from the Republic but from the Sith warlords themselves.

GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
  • Government:
    None [Modern]
  • Sith Theocracy [Ancient]

[*]Affiliation: The Sith
[*]Wealth: There is little in the way of real wealth on Mord'Rethar, whatever materials the warbands use as currency is considered worthless to the rest of the civilized galaxy. However, some would contend that the ancient tech that the tribes maintain and use is worth something.
[*]Stability: Anarchy and chaos truly reigns on Mord'Rethar with the law of the land being violence. The strong dominate the weak and endlessly struggle to fight over meager scraps of habitable land deep beneath the fetid surface of the planet.
[*]Freedom & Oppression: Despite the annihilation of higher culture on the planet, there are some remnants of the ancient Sith that resides in their barbarous descendants. Chiefly the penchant for enslavement and the exploitation of the weak.
MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
  • Military: The lack of any tangible civilization has led to the formation of various warbands all vying for control over what little habitable territory is left on Mord'Rethar, each one possessing severely outdated technology and primitive melee weapons of stone and crooked metal.
  • Technology: The technology, what little of it remains, controlled by the warbands of Mord'Rethar date back to the Golden Age of the Sith. Lanvaroks, Sith War Swords, ancient blaster rifles and, yes, even the occasional protosaber are the only weapons used by the regressed tribal people.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Eons ago during the Golden Age of the Sith the Dark Lord Naga Sadow launched a destructive war against the Republic, thrusting deep into Republic territory to strike at their capital of Coruscant. Accompanying the Dark Lord were many Sith Warlords and their personal armies, but instead of bolstering the Dark Lord's forces in attacking the Republic capital they continued to strike deep into and beyond Republic territory into the vast untamed and uncharted wastes of the Unknown Regions. Many years would pass as they blindly jumped from system to system, further distancing themselves from the Core Worlds until they reached a distant and uninhabited system on the edge of the galaxy. It was there that the Sith Warlords would establish a civilization that would outlast Sadow's Sith Empire but several centuries.

With their massive slave force the Sith Warlords built gargantuan monuments to their vanity, monolithic ziggurats that scraped the upper atmosphere dedicated to the worship of the Dark Side of the Force. To house such a labor force the Sith colonized not one, but three planets in the system and dedicated one of them to their unfathomable number of slaves. To house such a host required the construction of sprawling metropoles fashioned from black stone and built in a cyclopean manner. Compared to the capital of this new civilization, Aldur'thar, it was shoddy and unkempt.

The glorious city of Aldur'thar (situated on the planet of the same name) was an ecumenopolis littered with basalt towers and illuminated by the flare of green energy lanterns, with black discs running up the sides of the building. The palace of the warlords was the largest structure on the planet and was a massive windowless structure engraved with Sith runes running up each of its eight surfaces. On the exact opposite side of the planet was a massive collection basin designed to serve as a superweapon to strike against the Republic from afar. To function it required a massive amount of energy, more than the Sith were able to produce artificially. The reckless Sith turned to their single sun to power their mighty weapon, not realizing the consequences of doing so.

The Sith tampered too carelessly with the dark energy known as "quintessence" and inadvertently overloaded their collection basin, causing a massive system-wide explosion that gutted Aldur'thar and wiped out all life from the entire solar system. Entire cities were laid low in a matter of minutes, billions of lives erased in a single cataclysmic explosion. The only survivors of this disaster would be those confined the lowest levels of the Sith cities, slaves, scribes, servants, and warriors buried within their underground homes. Over thousands of years those survivors would forget their origins, becoming feral and tribal in their apocalyptic wastelands.

The Court of Bones would be forgotten in history for thousands of years until the rise of the One Sith Empire in the aftermath of the Four Hundred Year Darkness.

The Sith Lord Darth Vornskr was tasked by the Dark Lord of the One Sith to govern the Unknown Regions and explore its uncharted depths for colonization by the Empire once the war with the Galactic Republic ended in Sith victory. Unfortunately such an outcome would never come to pass as the One Sith and the Republic eventually killed each other through war, their bloated carcasses being consumed by chaos and destruction, plunging the Core Worlds in perpetual strife a hundred different successor states arose to claim the fallen mantles of power. Vornskr managed to survive the war, and fled to his home planet of Panatha while simultaneously taking any and all knowledge he had accumulated about the Unknown Regions through his years of probing and exploration.

Which included the location of Mord'Rethar.

Looks like a fun planet to explore.

My only concern is with a planet-wide Dark Nexus. The story behind it is good and sufficient justification in my mind however I do have concerns for balance. What effects could one expect to have beyond a boost for Dark Siders and nerf for Light Siders? Would there be any permanent effects from the Nexus or does it only effect those on Mordrethar? And are there feasible ways for Light aligned characters to mitigate the effects?

Sorry for the delay! Work has been whipping me for extra hours.

I believe there is sufficient effort in this submission for a Dark Nexus of this kind. The setting can be used in a narrative to give an interesting extra challenge to Light aligned characters whilst not leaving them hideously outranked if they play their cards right. I'm going to stamp this for approval on the understanding that setting foot on this planet is not an insta-win for a Dark character against a Light.

I really like this sub, and it's almost perfect.

One question though; how does anyone still live on it? If as you say the sun went nova and wiped out all surface life this planet would be a frozen husk.

Underground settlements can only go so far, especially with such a cataclysm robbing the planet of most of its heat and presumably air.

My thoughts are that the caves should be explained more, or make them planet currently uninhabited. Thoughts?

I added more to the Shadow Vault location:
