Description:

The Malos-class gunship is the Republic's answer to the Omega Pyre Inimica-class, and is best understood in contrast to that vessel. Slightly smaller, with considerably less cargo and passenger space, the Malos-class is more focused on engaging ground targets, or at least targets under the influence of a gravity well. Rather than mount the Inimica's vast array of warhead types, the Malos-class carries only concussion missiles and proton bombs, along with a thermal detonator capacity equal to a TIE Bomber's loadout. Rather than opt for dual high-powered turrets, the Malos-class's laser cannons rely on flexible semi-turreted mounts. This restricts field of fire but maximizes rear defense, and gives the Malos-class a slightly higher angle of forward attack.

Unlike the Inimica, the Malos-class relies on a single, powerful solar ionization reactor. In part, this is feasible because the Malos-class is a simpler ship in some respects. Its weapons systems are less varied and power-intensive, its shields are slightly weaker, and it mounts only a single main engine. It can almost match the Inimica for speed. The Malos-class is generally considered superior only against infantry positions and other large or spread-out ground-based targets, due to its thermal detonator and flame carpet/fuel-air warhead loadout. In most respects and most battlefields, however, the Inimica remains the slightly better ship. The tradeoff, of course, is Koensayr engineering, which is known for respectable, though not exceptional, performance hand in hand with reliability. The ship's hull is exceptionally durable, its components have some measure of shielding against ion interference, and every part of the ship has been stress-tested to destruction -- and to a very high standard.

The other major point of comparison which is often drawn falls between the Malos and the Republic's existing gunship, the Independence-class. The Independence is a repulsorlift-only vehicle, somewhat larger than the Malos. Its weapon loadout relies wholly on beam weapons and mass drivers, and it is often used as a transport craft for tanks, troops or walkers. The Malos is considerably faster than the Independence, capable of over 750kph at an altitude of 1km. It has no troop capacity, but it hits much harder, even against localized hard targets. Its mission role is entirely different, and Republic commanders will often deploy Malos-class vessels to escort the more fragile Independence-class units.
