Lurking in the shadows is less than what you'd expect

Lurking in the shadows is less than what you'd expect
Preface

The planet of Dathomir had long been under the control of the Mandalorian clans, yet activity on the planet was minimal at best. With the intergalactic conflicts between the Galactic Alliance and the One Sith, and especially with the recent fall of the One Sith, the planetary matters of Dathomir were ignored. But troubling times were cast over Dathomir as tensions and conflicts between the Nightsisters of Dathomir and the Witches of Dathomir went unregulated...

Chapter I.
Nightsister Fortress, Conclave Assembly
Phoebus stood silently within the large conclave of nightsisters within the Nightsister Fortress. Through channeling the spirit of Cynthia, Phoebus was able to stand side-by-side with other nightsisters unnoticed. Although the Nightsisters of Dathomir had been nearly annihilated multiple times, they were able to survive and continue existing. At this point in time, the Nightsisters had once again regained their strength and dominated most of the planetary matters. The other witch clans had long been suppressed, enduring the oppression of the Nightsisters.

This particular Conclave Assembly regarded the extermination of the Singing Mountain Clan, the long archenemies of the Spiderclan and staunch opponents to the Nightsisters of Dathomir. At this very moment, the forces of the nightsisters were growing every moment, with each nightsister on the edge of their bloodthirst. As the contingent of nightsisters within the main hall of the Nightsister Fortress grew larger and larger, the clan mother suddenly channeled a sea of spirit ichor encompassing the crowd and silencing everyone immediately. The green mist calmed the bloodlust significantly, bringing serenity to the atmosphere of the room.

"Sisters, I have gathered you here today to discuss the fall of the Singing Mountain Clan. Our shadow killers have confirmed that they possess the blasphemous Book of Law, and the seizure of it will solidify our rule and our doctrine, the Book of Shadows. I will open the floor to you, my sisters."

Chapter II.
Nightsister Fortress, Conclave Assembly

After a brief period of silence, the crowd became uninhibited with war cries and heated arguments once again as various nightsisters argued about the composition of the forces and potential strategies in assaulting the last stronghold of the Singing Mountain Clan. A small holorecorder concealed within one of Phoebus's many amulets recorded the events as a bargaining chip with the Singing Mountain Clan.

She silently assented to the flow of the crowd, moving closer and closer to the heart of the Nightsister Fortress, the Hidden Cave. As she got closer and closer, Cynthia had to work harder and harder to conceal Phoebus's Force nature as a nightsister as she received the subtle scrutiny of various officers and the clan mother herself at some point. As soon as she reached one of the main cavern walls of the Hidden Cave, Phoebus ducked into the shadows and equipped a fusion cutter. In another hand, she revealed a compact detonator and simultaneously began cutting into the main area of the Hidden Cave and activating the detonator.

At this moment, a series of blue plasma explosions breached the main walls of the Nightsister Fortress and chaos ensued. As nightsisters rushed towards reinforcing the main walls and defend against a potential assault, the clan mother hesitated for a split second before joining her sisters into the fray...

Chapter III.
Hidden Cave

A few minutes later, Phoebus had created a hole with a diameter of half a meter to crawl through and paused for a moment. Chanting the incantation for the Speed of Toochla, which increased her speed for a short duration of time, she began preparing her own basic spell. Called the Minor Reversion to the Whuffa Worm, the spell allowed for the Whuffa Worm's characteristics of flexibility and tougher skin to be applied to a single target for a few minutes. As she inscribed the spell with spirit ichor onto her skin, the joints in Phoebus's body began to relax while her skin became thicker and more resilient as spirit ichor filled her cells.

Contorting her body to fit the diameter of the hole, Phoebus crawled inside of Hidden Cave and before chanting a quick incanation for the Touch of Kiin`Dray to grasp the rock she carved out with the fusion cutter. Covering the hole once again with the rock, she released the Touch of Kiin`Dray and crept closer to the center of the Hidden Cave where the most prized and honored Book of Shadows was guarded.

As she approached the Book of Shadows, she spotted a total of six Nightbrother Warriors guarding the Book of Shadows in a circle facing all directions. Judging by the web-like runes carved into their bodies, Phoebus deducted they were externally controlled by the control web. Indicating that there existed a far more powerful guardian which lurked with her among the shadows. As this thought passed through her head, she heard a shill cry that echoed softly in the air...

Chapter IV.
Hidden Cave

Phoebus immediately dodged to the left, seeking one of the cave's rocks as cover. A bright pink burst of plasma seared through the spot that Phoebus was originally in and she looked dumbfoundedly at the huge gaping hole in the ground. It was clear that the arrows of this particular Nightsister Energy Bow were several fold stronger than the ones carried by ordinary nightsisters, indicating high status and heavy modifications to the existing design. Gripped with anxiety, Phoebus slowly took out her own energy bow, slowly moving in the shadows and waiting to spot the enemy before igniting the plasma bowstring of the bow and firing.

For a few minutes, the only noise that could be heard was the heavy breathing of the six male Nightbrother Warriors. As Phoebus laid prone waiting for her opponent to reveal herself, the Nightbrother Warriors suddenly roared before charging in all directions. Charging from their original positions, they would be able to sweep the entirety of the cavern simultaneously. Phoebus paused for a moment before doing a backwards barrel roll and standing upright. Drawing her energy bow and igniting the plasma bowstring, Phoebus directly aimed for the Book of Shadows and fired a plasma arrow...

Chapter V.
Hidden Cave

A feminine voice instantly cried "No," before emerging from the shadows and leaping in front of the plasma arrow to deflect it. Midair, the Nightsister crossed her two daggers in front of her in an attempt to block the plasma arrow. The Nightsister was just barely able to block the plasma arrow from hitting the Book of Shadows, but before she could recover, Phoebus leapt from position and fired another arrow at her. Clenching her teeth, the Nightsister ordered the six Nightbrother Warriors to charge toward Phoebus before using her body to cover the Book of Shadows. The arrow bore through her shoulder before stopping at the back of her armor, leaving a cauterized gaping wound that disabled her entire right arm. A small gasp was heard before she began charging toward Phoebus with her two daggers along with the six Nightbrother Warriors equipped with glaives.

The closest charging Nightbrother Warrior roared before violently swinging his large glaive at Phoebus's side. Phoebus simply ducked forward without breaking her momentum and gripped the end of her bow. As she passed the Nightbrother Warrior, she swung the back of her bow at the Nightbrother Warrior's back, causing a huge searing gash. As the Nightbrother Warrior cried in fury, Phoebus fired another arrow at the charging Nightsister in front of her and leapt above her.

The Nightsister looked in shock, before recollecting herself and dodging to the left. The arrow flew past her before slamming right into the stand that was holding the Book of Shadows. The Book of Shadows shook before falling onto the ground, and the Nightsister looked at the fallen book in horror and anger...

Chapter VI.
Hidden Cave

Glancing at the fallen Book of Shadows, Phoebus landed her flip at the base of the altar which housed the Book of Shadows. She immediately dashed forward and picked up the Book of Shadows. Pausing for a moment, she holstered the Book of Shadows gently into her backpack before turning around and charging toward the Nightsister. The Nightsister immediately threw her one of her daggers at Phoebus's legs and the 6 Nightbrother Warriors charged in an arc to come in front of Phoebus to stop her.

Sacrificing dodging in order to fire a clean shot at the Nightsister, the dagger pierced through the side of her shin and into the calf muscle, causing her to buckle slightly. Phoebus immediately fired as the dagger pierced her calf, which bored through the head of the Nightsister and killed her immediately. She grimaced as the pain nipped away at her conscious, but Phoebus willed herself to get closer to dead Nightsister. The other Nightbrother Warriors stopped and looked dazedly at Phoebus and at themselves. Phoebus paused in front of the corpse and rummaged around her possessions.

Finding a vial of the Water of Life, she channeled a small green mist of spirit ichor in one hand and used her other free hand to rip out the dagger in her calf. She guided the contents of the vial onto her calf, where the green mist of spirit ichor twisted into small tendrils which bore into her calf and bound together the torn flesh.

Chapter VII.
Hidden Cave

Turning toward the six Nightbrother Warriors, she paused before saying gently, "If you want to leave, follow me or continue to be enslaved to guard this place."

The Nightbrother Warriors looked at each other before scrambling to follow Phoebus. The one injured Nightbrother struggled to follow properly, so Phoebus used the remaining Water of Life to roughly heal his wounds. He looked thankfully at Phoebus, but she disregarded the gratitude and quickly scooped up some of the Nightsister's blood. Facing the six Nightbrother Warriors, she quickly used the blood the Nightsister to inscribe the spell, Minor Reversion to the Whuffa Worm, onto their bodies. She herself used the blood to replenish the spirit ichor of her original spell and began running towards her entry point.

Pushing the carved stone out of the hole, Phoebus immediately crawled out and inspected the outside. There were not many nightsisters left inside, and the rest had gone to repair the walls of the Nightsister Fortress and keep vigilance for possible assaults. A group of shadow killers roamed the interior of Nightsister Fortress, looking for the cause of the explosive reactions. Phoebus stood out from the crowd and the shadow killers approached her warily...

Chapter VIII.
Nightsister Fortress

As six Nightbrothers emerged behind her, the shadow killers began running toward Phoebus with their daggers drawn. The surrounding nightsisters looked on confused, before realizing and joining the shadow killers in their pursuit. Phoebus immediately started dashing toward one of the exits, and the Nightbrothers followed in suit. The shadow killers were slowly gaining on Phoebus, so she immediately pivoted on her right leg and shot a plasma arrow at the closest one. Pivoting once again, she turned back and continued running. Despite the slight hinderance, the shadow killers still were gaining faster and faster.

Phoebus attempted to bluff the shadow killers and yelled, "There is a thermal bomb in Hidden Cave. It will detonate in 3 minutes."

The shadow killers paused before continuing their chase. As they crept closer and closer, they slashed at the backs of the slower Nightbrothers and Phoebus could hear cries of pain. Disregarding the Nightbrothers, Phoebus threw a thermal detonator backwards at the Nightbrothers before exiting the Nightsister Fortress and into darkness of Dathomir....

Chapter IX.
Nightsister Fortress

The Nightbrothers looked dumbfounded at the incoming thermal detonator and their hearts chilled as they realized they were a sacrifice for Phoebus. Several of them cursed as they attempted to run back, others closed their eyes and accepted their fate, and one--the one that was injured and healed by Phoebus--continued fleeing for his life. The shadow killers immediately withdrew, and the thermal detonator landed dully onto the floor. The dampened echo of metal striking stone rang dumbly through the ears of all. The shadow killers, infuriated at the deception, began running full speed ahead. The Nightbrothers would either attempted to run back or closed their eyes were executed by the shadow killers, with the one sole Nightbrother surviving and successfully fleeing with Phoebus.

Just as the shadow killers were next to the thermal detonator, it exploded and disrupted their movements completely. The ones closest to the thermal detonator were severely injured and marred while those farther away were scathed by the detonator's flames. Contrary to the deafening noise inside, the outside was eerily silent...

Chapter X.
Nightsister Fortress

As Phoebus and the Nightbrother Warrior made their way into the forests of Dathomir, the Nightbrother Warrior followed silently and with fervor in his eyes. Phoebus silently continued through the forest before reaching her personal shuttle.

Turning towards the Nightbrother Warrior, she asked lightly, "What do you want to do from here?"

He stood there silently before replying, "I would like to serve you."

Dropping to one knee, he kneeled and bowed his head in reverence. Nodding, Phoebus went to the shuttle for a moment before returning with her staff. Tapping the Nightbrother Warrior gently on the shoulder with the staff, Phoebus's voice reverberated with the power of spirit ichor: "You are now a guardian to Phoebus. You will be now known as Lycorus. The spirits are our witness."

Holding the staff, Phoebus slowly entered the shuttle with the Nightbrother behind her.
