Strengths
-higher rate of fire compared to standard laser cannons
-Better tracking on smaller targets because of shorter barrel length and less overall mass
-optimized for efficiency against a variety of targets with an integrated droid brain, multiple fire modes, and intensities.

Weaknesses
-individual autoblaster bolts are much weaker than standard laser cannon bolts
-Lesser damage output over a comparable amount of time compared to standard quad laser cannons
-droid brain targeting can be tricked by canny opponents or innovative tactics

Description: The Sentinel-class Point Defense Emplacement at its most basic level is a quad autoblaster controlled by a droid brain derived from an automated laser trap. The quad autoblaster is derived from the Gyrhil 72 twin autoblaster found originally on the B-wing. Like that weapon, it boasts a higher rate of fire and longer range than typical laser cannons, but its individual bolts and overall damage output are correspondingly weaker than those weapons. The weapon's barrles, and consequently is mass, are smaller than a typical laser cannons, which moderately improves the weapon's ability to track small targets. These characteristics make the Sentinel ideal at destroying incoming ordinance and small starfighters, thought it is slightly less effective at destroying starfighters at a laser canon's typical effective range.

Taking cues from its larger brother the LLT-8 Triumph-class Light Quad Turbolaser, the Sentinel has several different intensity and fire pattern settings, which allow it to adapt itself to better counter different foes on the battlefield. On its highest intensity, the combined salvo of four bolts is roughly equivalent to 80% of a standard laser cannon bolt. Its middle setting fires twice as quickly, but each bolt is half as strong as the previous bolts (about 1/8 as powerful as a standard laser cannon bolt). On its lowest intensity setting, individual bolts are equivalent to an E-Webs, but at a much higher rate of fire, making it well-suited to hitting many small targets such as a salvo of missiles.

These intensity settings are then combined with the three firing patterns of the Triumph-class Light Quad Turbolaser.

The first is called the “one-two punch firing pattern”, where the autoblasters are fired in staggered pairs. Ideally, the first pair of shots would knock out the target’s defenses, such as shielding or armor plating, allowing the second pair of bolts to hit the target’s weaker innards itself. Because of the low power of the Sentinel-class itself, this mode is most effective against low to moderately armored targets such as interceptors and space superiority starfighters, though it is often used effectively in conjunction with other weapons in a barrage on larger starships such as bombers or gunships. Typically this mode is used with the highest fire setting to quickly knock and destroy enemy starfighters attacking a host ship.

The second fire mode is the “one-two continual firing pattern”, which typically uses the medium and low fire intensity to produce almost incessant barrage of bolts that appears and acts like a continual laser beam. This mode is useful for cutting through swathes of small or fast moving targets such as incoming missiles or droid swarm fighters. It is also sometimes used by ship commanders to bore through a subcapital starship’s shields to precisely destroy a ship’s subsystem, such as a freighter’s hyperdrive, or to destroy things like mynocks or pistoeka saboteur droids from friendly vessels.

The last fire pattern fire-links all of the autoblasters to fire simultaneously with a lower rate of fire. While it can be used with any fire intensity, it is typically combined with the highest fire intensity where the bolts can impact areas almost simultaneously to punch through shields via brute force or utterly incinerate small targets. This mode is commonly used against tougher targets that are easier to track, such as bombers and gunships.

These fire modes are typically decided by the droid brain, which uses its rapid processing speed to acquire targets and fire upon them far quicker than most organic gunners possibly could. However, unlike organic gunners, the Sentinel can be more easily tricked by different tactics and strategies employed by their opponents. Each emplacement contains a typical Electrophoto Receptor and an infra-red sensor which provides the visual feed that the Sentinel typically uses to acquire its targets. These onboard sensors are typically supplemented by sensor feed from the host’s ships sensor systems, such as full spectrum transceivers, especially when they coordinate defensive fire with one another or with the ship’s gunnery teams. The emplacement can also be taken over and run manually by a gunner in case of damage to the droid brain. Most of the time, the gunnery teams simply prioritize targets and coordinate their fire, rather than actually firing the weapons. Taking a cue from the automated laser traps which partially inspired the design, the Sentinel contains a back-up powercell to supply it with a minute's worth of energy in case its power supply is interrupted or otherwise taken offline.

Lucerne Labs is currently restricting the sale of this system to Republic military projects and peoples associated with the Galactic Republic. Still, there are some within the the company who are pushing for it to be released on the open market. It remains to be seen if its use will spread.
