PRODUCTION INFORMATION:
  • Manufacturer: The One Sith
  • Model: IW-W01A Interchangeable Weapon System
  • Affiliation: The Iron Guard
  • Production: Limited (Produced only for the Iron Guard)
  • Modularity:
Silencer: A device, utilizing the same technology as the Parentine Sonics SNS-600 Sound Bubble, which silences the weapon when fired. Can only be used in the blaster-rifle configuration.
  • Top Universal Rail System: The universal rail system allows a wide variety of accessories to be attached to the top of the weapon system.
  • Bottom Universal Rail System: The universal rail system allows a wide variety of accessories to be attached to the bottom of the weapon system.
    Examples of under-barrel attachments:
    Under-barrel Shotgun
  • Under-barrel Grenade Launcher
  • Under-barrel Flamethrower
  • Under-barrel Acid-thrower

[*]Material: Dalorian Alloy, Duranium, Plasteel, Interchangeable Weapon System Parts
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

[*]Ammunition Capacity:
  • Blaster Rifle Configuration: five hundred (500) per clip
  • Sniper Rifle Configuration: ten (10) per clip
  • Anti-Armor Configuration: five (5) per clip

[*]Effective Range:
  • Blaster Rifle Configuration: 75m
  • Sniper Rifle Configuration: 450m
  • Anti-Armor Configuration: 75m

[*]Special Features:
  • Interchangeable Weapon System: The design of the weapon allows it to switch between three different configurations, at the press of a button: a blaster-rifle configuration, a sniper-rifle configuration, and an anti-armor configuration.
  • Multi-scope: To coincide with the weapon systems variable nature, a similarly variable scope is mounted to the top of the weapons system.
Blaster Rifle / Anti-Armor Configuration: In this configuration, the scope acts as a red-dot sight, with no zoom-in.
  • Sniper Rifle Configuration: In this configuration, the scope can switch between 4x, 10x, and 20x zoom.

[*]Laser Sight: A small device that uses a laser to pinpoint impact.
[*]2x Universal Rail System: Small pieces of metal, mounted to the top and bottom of the weapon, that allows the attachment of various accessories.

DESCRIPTION: Designed by The One Sith, the IW-W01A Interchangeable Weapon System was a limited-issue weapon used by Isamu Baelor's Iron Guard forces. Designed to meet the ever-changing demands of the battlefield, the weapon could switch between multiple configurations, allowing the Iron Guard forces a degree of adaptability not present with standard One Sith weaponry. The weapons base configuration was one of a blaster rifle. However, it could also configured into a sniper rifle, or anti-armor grenade launcher. To coincide with the weapons variable nature, the mounted scope would also change it's configuration, to match that of the weapon. To further expand the weapon's adaptability, and facilitate the attachment of a variety of accessories, universal rail systems were incorporated into the design of the weapon. Located beneath, and above, the weapon's barrel, the rails allowed the attachment of a variety of accessories, including under-barrel: shotguns, grenade launchers, flamethrowers, acid-throwers, and more. As well as scopes, on top. In addition, a laser sight module was mounted to the side of the weapon, to aid with the user's accuracy. And a silencer could be attached, for situations were stealth was paramount.

This may not work very well with the sniper rifle configuration. The sound bubble you've linked me to produces a bubble that's five meters in diameter. So while this would render the initial firing of the projectile silent, it wouldn't do anything about the projectile's ballistic crack that it makes once it leaves the barrel. There are such things as subsonic bullets (or quarrels), but they tend to have a lesser velocity, and consequently a lesser range. Speaking of which...

As per the description of the DC-17m, this should probably be 450 meters.

Is sniper rifle capacity 5 rounds or 10 rounds?

The DC-17m pretty well establishes the concept of an IWS, however, it was only issued in very low numbers as an elite weapon. I'm concerned about the potential for abuse that could potentially come with seeing several hundred plain-jane infantry suddenly turn into several hundred elite snipers or heavily armed anti-armor troops in less than a minute. I see two ways to see this concern addressed, though I am open to other ideas that you might have to address this concern.

1) Reduce production to limited: This would be to mirror the status of the original DC-17m as an elite weapon issued out only in small numbers to small groups of troops. I'm not sure how large the Iron Guard is, but at this production level, it should not be something that is encountered in large numbers during battles.

2) Armorer-class Modularity: The weapon remains modular and available in relatively large numbers on the battlefield, but it requires a trained armorer to switch out the different modules, takes a semi-significant amount of time to swap out(~10 minutes), or needs special facilities (like a fully outfitted workshop) to perform. Basically the weapon can't be instantly switched into something completely different; some time needs to elapse before this takes place.

Again, with the amount of special features that this has, I think the written description should be fleshed out a bit more.

It does use quarrels.

Changed to 450m.

Is sniper rifle capacity 5 rounds or 10 rounds?
10. Fixed the typo.

1) Reduce production to limited:
I've dropped the production to limited.

Fleshed out the description.

What I'm saying is that to maintain a subsonic round (one that's essentially silent when travelling through the air), there is a tradeoff, typically in range and power. Let's do physics.

The speed of sound is 340 meters per second. Anything faster than that makes a sonic boom (or ballistic crack) as it travels. Consequently, the projectile must be travelling less than 340 meters per second to travel silently through the air.

However, velocity affects damage output:

Kinetic Energy (damage) = 1/2 * mass * (velocity)^2
Momentum (the "knock-down" you see in movies) = mass * velocity

As you can see, a lower velocity to maintain subsonic travel reduces damage typically. The main way to offset that is to use a heavier projectile. Heavier projectiles tend to be larger, and thus have more resistance when travelling through air, which in turn means that they have less range.

There's almost always a tradeoff for a significant advantage.

If you're interested in a canon example of this, check out the Magna Caster-100. It's a silent sniping weapon that launches quarrels through magnetic acceleration. Note that it only has a range of 100 meters.

I see three options for this sniper variant.

1. Keep range of 450 meters and damage output of the DC-17m. The weapon is no longer silent.
2. Change range to 225 meters and describe reduced damage compared to traditional sniping weapons. Weapon is silent.
3. Change range to 100 meters. Weapon does full damage of typical sniping weapons and is silent.
