Faction Map Question

Quick question
I see some small territories and massive territories.
What determines a Factions range of influence on the main MAP?
I mean when these factions where created, did they write out taking over all planets or main planets, how did they achieve the borders?

Each faction started with three planets and they have to earn them by dominion or invasion.

Wow this both amazes and terrifies me lol.
Writers are hard at work and I am pleased that it is work that achieved the shown borders/territory. But also afraid we'll be swallowed up!

It means the smaller you are. The more work you have to do sO you Ont get crushed.

Can a faction eventually be destroyed if they are down to one planet?

Even if they have 20 planets, they can be destroied by having their Capitol planet taken, or the give up.

This is not true. If a capital planet is taken, they just choose another capital planet.
