LOCATION INFORMATION
  • Capital City: Verros Compound (Settlement)
  • Planetary Features: New Vylmira is a long-abandoned planet dotted with ruins of an ancient offshoot of the Rakatan species. The planet is separated into three distinct zones known as The Surface, The Tangle, and The Upperlands. The Surface is a vast ocean dotted with many large islands and a few small continents. The ocean, comprised of water and a multitude of marine flora and fauna, only reaches two kilometers on average. The landmasses serve as the base of a large, planet-wide structure known as the Tangle. Often covered in flora manifesting as forests and jungles, the surface rarely sees true sunlight as the entire planet is covered in a persistent layer of clouds. This layer, commonly referred to as the Tangle, is named for the large tendrils of rock and ore that weave between each other. These structures serve as supports for the "Upperlands," the fake surface of the planet. This layer is largely devoid of animal life, but flora is quite commonly found growing on the rock tendrils. Above the cloud layer, one finds the region known as the Upperlands. For all intents and purposes, a sea of clouds dotted by islands of various topographies and sizes. Grasslands is the most common among these, and while a few larger islands give the illusion of solid ground, many of the "islands" are a loose collection of mesas, akin to the geography of Makeb. Unless one was to venture into the sea of dense gasses that acts as the floor of this layer, this would appear to be the planet's surface.
  • Major Locations:
    • Verros Compound

      • The Seat of Power on New Vylmira, the compound was originally meant to serve as a private getaway for the Khanite, the previous rulers of the Shiraya Expanse. Crafted of luxurious stone and wood, the compound was abandoned when its founder and financer ran afoul of his fellow warlords. The Ascendancy has taken control of it, and is using the small city as a home base from which to explore and settle the rest of the planet. Built with state of the art defenses and technology, the compound's more secure areas double as both palace and command center, from which the new Consul and warlord governs his planet. While the compound is split across five Mesas, airspeeders are readily available to transport between the mesas that are not connected to the primary spire. Owing to the temperate climate, the structures in the compound are primarily open air, with external structures being made of woods harvested off planet, and internal structures being carved into the Mesas themselves.
    • The Tangle
      8de865ac131c9d56c3c4ee59cdd0743f.jpg
      • The Tangle is the largest uncharted region of the planet, consisting entirely of a tangle of rock and other natural elements, all encased in an eternal fog. The condensation of water and cloud makes this area perpetually damp, and often a very lush environment when adequate surface is provided for flora to grow. Often dangerous to traverse, the Tangle is only the first of many dangers those traveling to the surface of New Vylmira will encounter.
    • The Surface

      • The surface of New Vylmira is an unexplored and dangerous territory. Filled with flora and fauna of all kinds, the Surface is also home to the ruins of a once thriving Rakatan civilization. Now only populated by a wide array of fauna, the surface is a hostile territory to those unprepared. Many of the creatures have been twisted into beasts of war, with a number of predatory animals locked in an ecosystem of hunt or be hunted. Due to the persistent cloud layer above, the surface does not see natural sunlight. It does, however, receive artificial light from ancient Rakatan structures that simulate sunlight. Many of these structures are inert, however, and must be manually reactivated. When not subjected to the effects of artificial sunlight, the Surface exists in a perpetual twilight, save for the night cycles when it is plunged into near total darkness. Rain is not a question of if, but when, and rivers & Waterfalls are abundant.
    • The Grand Temple

      • The Grand Temple is equal parts fortress and training grounds for the ancient Rakata that once lived here. Theorized to be the seat of power for the ancient race, the Temple houses ancient records, supplies, and technology. Built into the base of the largest tendril, the Temple is found at the south pole of the planet. The fortress still contains a number of security measures, be they mechanical, force related (Detailed in the Nexus), or Organic. The most common obstacle that explorers face are their own fallen bretheren, consumed and subservient to the temple's will. At the center of the temple is a great tree, growing from an altar that many suspect was used in ritual sacrifice. This tree is the source of the Force Nexus, and theorized to house an entity that controls the minds of those who have succumbed to the influence of the Nexus. Entering the Temple is a trial of its own, and many have spoken of making such a journey a rite of passage once the planet is better populated.
  • Force Nexus (Optional):
Intent: To add a region of influence over the Force induced by the Rakata many millennia ago, akin to the Tree Cave on Dagobah.
    Nexus Name: The Grand Temple
  • Nexus Alignment: Dark
  • Size: Medium
  • Strength: Moderate
  • Accessibility: The Grand Temple is readily accessible, provided one knows the location. Though some latent security measures still exist within the structure. However, the Nexus is large enough that one does not have to be in the Temple, but merely on its grounds to feel the effects.
  • Effects: The Nexus was formed by the repetition of ritual and trials. The Temple was a place the Rakata trained their most fearsome warriors, and the after-effects of these trials still manifest. Those subjected to the Nexus can feel a sense of impending doom, or that they face a great adversity should they continue. The Nexus itself can manifest visions to test those who enter it, physically, mentally, spiritually, and psychologically. Those who draw on the Nexus as a source of power can find themselves succumbing to corruption, and being filled with a desire to destroy all around them to maintain the sanctity of a holy site. Those under these effects would face a great mental struggle to maintain their own identity, and may be consumed to serve as a guardian of the temple, in retribution for drawing on its power. At the center of the temple is a great tree, growing from an altar suspected to be used in ritual sacrifice. This tree is the source of the Force Nexus, and thought to house an entity that controls the minds of those who have succumbed to the influence of the Nexus.

POPULATION
  • Native Species: Various non-sentient life-forms
  • Immigrated Species: Rakata (Extinct) Human, Mirith, Other
  • Population: Sparse
  • Demographics: Human 99%, Other 1%
  • Primary Languages: Galactic Basic
  • Culture: New Vylmira is a growing agricultural planet, with people dedicated to the ideal of "Easy living" in comparison to the rest of the Shiraya Expanse. It is seen as equally honorable to continue in military service after one's mandatory period, or to retire and join one of the many farms that dot the Upperlands. Another widely spread profession is that of an explorer, venturing below the Tangle to map the Rakatan Ruins on the surface, and bring back useful items or materials to the colonies in the Upperlands. Crime is seen as reprehensible, and punished by mandatory expeditions to the areas of the surface regarded as extremely dangerous. Life on New Vylmira is widely regarded as peaceful, and those who seek to disrupt this peace are often shunned and encouraged to leave the planet.
GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
  • Government: Feudal Monarchy
  • Affiliation: The Ascendancy
  • Wealth: Low
    • New Vylmira is home to a number of independently wealthy or powerful people from the Ascendancy, but economically the planet is little more than a colony. Without the support of its patrons and the Ascendancy, the planet would have little to no economic power.
  • Stability: High
    • The presence of a mandatory service military within the civilized portions of the planet ensure that the law is followed closely, and any infractions of the law are dealt with harshly. Those who prove troublesome but not actively breaking the law are encouraged to leave before action must be taken.
  • Freedom & Oppression: New Vylmira is governed by an Ascendancy Consul, a warlord strong enough to prove his or her right to govern the planet through strength. This Consul is bound by the Common Law of the Ascendancy, and must enforce those laws upon the planet. Beyond this, citizens are free to live as they see fit, so long as they are not needlessly antagonistic towards their fellow citizens. The Common Law is defined as follows:
    • Slavery is outlawed
    • Each citizen shall have a basic standard of living: food, work, housing, and basic amenities are guaranteed.
    • Each world will have a Consul appointed.
    • Each Consul swears fealty to the Dominus and agrees to contribute manpower and funds to the Empire.
    • Each Consul agrees to rally to the call of the Dominus.
    • So long as the Common Law is upheld, the Dominus agrees to allow the Consuls freedom of operation.
MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
  • Military: All citizens of New Vylmira are subjected to mandatory military service for a period of two cycles (or Species equivalent, if a shorter-lived species) upon reaching the age of majority as determined by their species. Those who wish to remain in the military structure are permitted to do so, but face mandatory retirement in the event they reach the final third of their species expected life cycle (IE, humans with an average lifespan of 90 years would face mandatory retirement at age 60). Ethereia touts itself as the enforcers of the Ascendancy, and a large portion of its dedicated military is Force Sensitive. While a few warships are present in the Ethereian Navy, the vast majority of its military strength lies in ground forces.
  • Technology: Galactic Standard
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Shrouded in mystery, New Vylmira is one of the least populated planets within the Shiraya Expanse. First efforts to colonize the planet were made by the Khanate in 863 ABY, but were halted shortly after the warlord in charge of the system was deposed for double crossing his fellow warlords. An effort was rekindled to colonize the planet, as many thought it would make for an excellent retreat for the rich and powerful among the Khanate. Efforts were halted when an individual by the name of Tay'do Daay-Val took a starship below the ocean of clouds to discover a vast network of rock and soil. The first to successfully navigate what he named The Tangle, Daay-Val discovered a vast surface of the planet, dotted with a number of ancient and unidentified ruins.

Many expeditions were led by the new reigning warlord, Ic'nja Mog, as Mog thought the ruins contained treasures that would boost his standing within the Khanate. For nearly the next decade, Mog would develop his personal fortress in the skies above the surface, and deploy his men to the jungles below. But all expeditions ceased shortly after the discovery of a structure known as the Grand Temple. Three expeditions were led with total losses, before Mog himself led a veritable army into the depths of the temple. Mog was never seen nor heard from again. And so the planet was declared haunted by the irrational, and dangerous by the rational. New Vylmira was a forgotten world, until the arrival of the Confederate Remnant.

Shortly after the defeat of the Khanate, members of the new government, the Ascendancy, ventured to the planet after learning of it from some of the surviving Warlords. They settled in to the existing compound, and the decision was made to formally establish the world as an Ascendancy colony. One of the chief agriculture producers of the Expanse, New Vylmira was a relatively peaceful planet. Expeditions to the surface were forbidden, and any who ventured below did so at their own peril. Aid would not be rendered to any who ventured below against the wishes of the Consul, the new ruler of the planet.

After a stable colony was established, however, the Consul did begin to authorize expeditions below, but with strict conditions. The Ascendancy had resources to better traverse the ruins than the Khanate, but it was still a dangerous prospect. Any items or treasures found below were the property of the finder, so long as each and every item was declared to the Consul, and properly catalogued so as to expand the Ascendancy's knowledge of what lurked below. Soon, the Consul hopes to establish a second settlement in the region that has been colloquially named the Upperlands, and has suggested exploring the idea of a settlement on the surface of the planet to serve as a forward base for expeditions into the wilderness. But before then, the Tangle must be mapped...

Man, the Rakata Tech ban isn't even cold in the ground and folks are already coming to loot the body. Since this is Ethereia, maybe the Princesses of Power will come help the Ascendancy get established. In all seriousness, this is a nicely-written sub with some clear story potential, so nice work! Just a few minor things before approval.

  • Location: I would encourage you to specify a hex that this planet is in, or at least place it in relation to other planets, so that people can get a more concrete idea of where it's located. If you don't ever intend to add it to the map, it can stay vague, I suppose.

  • Native Species: Native in this context means "evolved on this planet", like Rodians on Rodia and Duros on Duro. The Rakata, so far as we know from Legends, originated on Lehon. As such, they cannot be native to this planet. I'd move them down to Immigrated Species, where you can still specify that they all died off. If you want there to be a biosphere here but don't have any custom creatures for the planet, it's fine to say "various non-sentient creatures" or something to that effect.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns!

Thanks for the heads up on the native species thing, don't know why that never occurred to me before.

Everything else has been tweaked per direction. And yes, you're damn straight I'm looting the corpse. So much easier than having to sub an entire "Generic forerunner civilization goes here" project. :p
