Approved Planet Dahomey

Status
Not open for further replies.
Name: Dahomey

Region: Inner Rim, near Thyferra
System: Dahomey
Suns: 1 medium white main sequence.
Orbital Position: 0.9 AU relative distance.
Moons: 2; Ashanti and Vodun. Ashanti is approximately 2000km in diametre, Vodun is barely 200km, and is likely a captured body.
Coordinates: L20, near the meeting of the Rimma and Corellian trade routes.
Rotational Period: 42 standard hours.
Orbital Period: 0.9 standard years.

Class: Terrestrial.
Diameter: 9,850km
Atmosphere: Type I. Was previously Type II.
Climate: Mostly arid near the equator. The northern continent is the only one with permanent settlement because trade winds bring rain from the colder north. This area is subject to extremes of heat, rainfall and storms. The planet is very warm though, especially away from the coast. This is due to the closer proximity of the planet to its star, and the long day/night cycle.
Gravity: 0.8 standard. Barely noticeable.
Primary Terrain: The southern and equatorial continents are mostly arid save for small areas along the coast. Mountains and contrary winds turns the insides of these continents into deserts and rocky plains with occasional volcanic activity. The northern continent is somewhat better, with flatter lands, better and more regular rainfall leading to grasslands in the rainy season and veldt in the dry, not unlike southern and western Africa on Earth. The northern pole is suspected to be an ice covered land mass, because it is much larger than the southern ice pole.

Native species: No sentient. An array of sea life lives in the salty oceans, while on the continents various animals have developed to survive in the dry conditions. Particularly notable are the barbflies which inject a local muscle relaxant which can be quite dangerous to the young or old if stung near the chest or torso. Also of note are small parasitic leech creatures which can attach themselves to their hosts and can cause behavioral changes. The Kardok are also infamous for their fierce nature. These crocodilian creatures have long fangs and can even stand on their hind legs briefly so they can crush and maul their prey.
Immigrated species: Along with humans and other sentient species, the usual collection of pests and feral creatures have arrived. There is a large amount of Nexu who live in the grasslands and prey on the herbivores. How they got there is unknown.
Primary languages: Basic
Government: Previously tribal and despotic warlordships. Now corporate rule from Omega Pyre.
Population: 23 million total. Of these 95% are human, with a mix of Twi'lek, Togruta, Trandoshan and others who thrive in hot climates.
Demonym: Dahomian
Major cities: The major city is named Abomey, while other smaller settlements exist. Abomey contains about 1 million inhabitants, mainly because it is the only galactic spaceport on the planet. This population fluctuates wildly however. The nearest settlement in size is named Jalon with less than 100,000. Abomey is the only planet where there is major alien presence.
Major imports: Food, consumer and luxury goods, mining machinery and talented engineers.
Major exports: Gold, salt, copper, diamonds, previously slaves and exotic animals before OP occupation.
Affiliation: Now Omega Pyre. Previously independent.

Culture: The long period of isolation allowed the inhabitants to develop their own unique culture. This culture is based around warrior and martial prowess, a culture of institutionalised violence and challenges, and oddly, an appreciation for art. Art is striking on Dahomey, as it is usually made from junk and wrecked machines from the pre-dark ages. Seeing a composite sculpture made of broken glass and speeder parts is not uncommon. Another interesting aspect of the culture is the role of women. Far from being pushed off to the side like in many pre-modern cultures, the Dahomians often use female warriors in their armies, but there are rumours of a hidden settlement of 'Amazons' who enslave men for procreation and are fiercely independent. These rumours have not been verified.
Technology: The long isolation hit the planet hard, and it regressed badly to pre-industrial levels. However, the last twenty years have seen an upsurge in technology brought by offworlders.
History: Dahomey developed as a planet with a basic, but not plentiful supply of water and life. That it produced no sentient life was probably a reflection on the lateness which it developed. There are some who suggest that the reptilian Kardok might one day have evolved to sentience given an extra few million years. Alas, it did not happen.
Dahomey was discovered during the great expansion around six thousand years before the present day. It was immediately discovered to have rich mineral deposits, and Czerka launched an expedition to the planet around the time of the Jedi Civil War. Prospectors found the world forbidding, as the atmosphere was hazardous with long exposure, being too high in carbon dioxide and other traces. They set up terraforming stations and a small outpost, which was abandoned because of marauding pirates attacking nearby. The planet, never high on the list of best worlds, was left alone for over two thousand years before being rediscovered by Republic surveyors.

In that time the planet had been gradually terraformed into a breatheable atmosphere, and with some of the sting taken from the greenhouse effect of the world settlement could begin in earnest. Early expeditions suffered from the heat, disease and predators. The Kardok especially proved ferocious predators and many colonists sought easier pickings elsewhere. Those that stayed though found that the planet was rich in gold, copper and lesser metals. Its remoteness and lack of big corporate attention though ensured this operation was small scale.

During the reign of the Empire Dahomey was forcefully settled by prisoners of wars, deserters and troublemakers. The Imperials used these 'settlers' to mine and imprison their enemies, with high mortality rates. After the fall of the Empire the now freed prisoners mostly decided to stay. More settlers from ruined worlds followed during and after the Vong Invasion, and a steady population rise led to more exploration. Abomey was founded as an actual city in this time, expanding out from the old Imperial spaceport, and growing to a considerable settlement. As time went on the settlers and miners adapted to the climate, becoming darker skinned, having their own dialect and choosing their own path, being part of no major state. This was the best time in the planet's history, as the minerals were in high demand and trade was plentiful. Then came the Dark Age.

Like so many worlds, the Gulag Virus caused a catastrophe because planets like Dahomey were unsustainable without imports of food. The virus and anarchy afterwards led to a cessation of trade, which meant no one shipped food to Dahomey or bought their minerals. The result was a demographic collapse and a breakdown of society. When the plague eventually reached the planet via the last few traders the result was horrifying. It is estimated that before the Dark Age there was upwards of 80 million people on Dahomey, many of them working as miners or in other such trades. By the time contact was reestablished only 15 million were left. This 80% drop led and was helped by the formation of warlord bands who fought over the scare resources. Communities ventured into the wastes to escape, forming communities, some of which have not been re-contacted. Amongst these are the mythical 'Amazons' who supposedly are formed by women determined not to be preyed on my men.

The long dark passed though, when the Independent Mining Guild and the Republic landed on the planet. Ironically one thing the planet had lots of during the crisis was gold, but since it was so common it was useless to the warlords. The IMG quickly established rights to the world, buying tonnes of gold in exchange for weapons, technology and food. The warlords grew and extended their reach, enslaving the survivors to profit for them.

Just a year before the present, Republic General Amherst was dispatched to investigate reports of slavery, abuses and corruption on the planet, in the interest of extending influence to this area of the galaxy. However, he and his forces defected, took over the warlords and used his superior weaponry to rule over the planet. He imposed heavy 'tariffs' on the IMG and made the planet his fief. The Republic informally contacted Omega Pyre, in whose SOI Dahomey is, and asked them to intervene, on the understanding that they would bring Amherst to justice and provide fairer rule. Thus Vice-President Tegaea Alcori and her associate Siobhan Kerrigan assembled a crack force of mercenaries and captured the city of Abomey. Amherst was captured and 500 of his men killed or captured. In the aftermath, OP has taken control of the planet, allowing IMG access to the resources, and working to bring a better lot to the people of the planet.

Notable PC's: None.

Intent: This planet was created for an RP http://starwarsrp.net/topic/911-recruitment-campaign-siobhan/ and we would like to add it to Omega Pyre's list of worlds since we did do an RP taking control of it.

I'd prefer the planet gets judged and approved before role-playing on it, or the whole thread would be deemed Non-Canon.

With that said, this is a fine application, with a lot of thought and work put into it. Approved. It'll be added the next time the map gets updated, which might be this upcoming Sunday, if not, then the next.

Well, we did the RP and then thought we should make it official. If it hadn't been approved then it would have just been one of the nameless worlds we RP on which doesn't appear on the map.

Thanks Tef. Appreciate it. :)
