BAALIN
Jedi Padawan

Baalin was born on Quarzite to a small enclave of Kage artisans who sought to live apart from the endless power struggles of their clans. Idealistic, but pragmatic, they understood that danger was a persistent threat, which they prepared for by training in combat - the clan didn't seek battle, but were ready for it. Baalin's first memories from days after birth were of watching his parents duel, performing something like a dance. Baalin was tutored in the same warrior way from early childhood, though his parents were reluctant, given their dedication to becoming more peaceful artisans.

When Baalin was twelve, that fragile pursuit of peace shattered. A large Belugan warband razed their settlement in a single night of fire and shadow. Baalin escaped through the ruins of his community - terrified, burned, and alone - stumbling through the death and destruction. His golden eyes pierced the smoke and darkness; he heard the screams and fighting, and it was imprinted into his mind like stone. He had also witnessed the deaths of his parents, his family, and those visceral mental images would never be forgotten.

Baalin reached a nearby Kage-occupied city. Alone, he began living on the streets, keeping to shadows and stealing what he could to eat - and that would be his life for several years.

Through fortune, or fate, Baalin saw an opportunity to escape his situation and to leave the ghosts of his past behind on Quarzite; so, he entered the starport, where smugglers were preparing to depart with - likely illegal - cargo. Desperate, he stowed away on a departing freighter bound for the Mid Rim. For weeks, he hid among the cargo holds, scavenging for scraps and water, surviving on instinct. When the ship finally docked at a trading outpost, Baalin was discovered by the crew - gaunt, wild-eyed, and clutching a small piece of carved obsidian, the only remnant of his family.

The smugglers knew the risks of loose ends; they decided to silence the stowaway.

It was there that Jedi Knight Aiden Porte, stationed on the outpost to investigate pirate activity, sensed the child's presence through the Force. When he found Baalin, the boy was cornered, ready to fight for his life with a rusted tool. In fact, he had already injured one of the smugglers who had gotten too close, a clean stab to the thigh. Yet, instead of fear, Aiden saw a fierce spark of will - and an aura of darkness flickering around Baalin like smoke.

The Jedi deterred the smugglers, who left the boy alone. Aiden took him in, fed him, and began to test his connection to the Force. What the Jedi found frightened him as much as it inspired: a survivor whose strength was born from pain, and whose empathy ran deep enough to drown him.

Personality
Baalin carries the quiet intensity of someone who's seen too much too young. He rarely speaks of his past and dislikes being pitied. Though disciplined in appearance, he struggles with resentment - toward fate, toward the memories, and sometimes toward himself for surviving when others didn't.
He’s fiercely protective of others, especially the weak or overlooked, often defying orders to help them. This compassion, while noble, sometimes draws him dangerously close to anger when he feels injustice is ignored.
Despite his inner conflict, Baalin is not consumed by darkness; rather, he studies it, trying to understand the emotions that others fear. It is possible this pursuit could one day make him a great Jedi... or destroy him entirely.

The Force
  • Rank - Padawan
  • Combat Style - Djem So (Form V), defensive base with aggressive counters; reflects his struggle to control power rather than deny it.
  • Fighting Temperament - Relies on instinct and precision. Avoids killing unless absolutely necessary.
  • Aptitude
~ Force Sense: Can feel emotions and intentions like ripples in the Force; extremely accurate with pain, fear, and deceit
~ Force Stealth: Can suppress his Force signature to near invisibility - a survival skill turned discipline.
~ Force Echo: Can 'read' the emotional memory imprinted on objects or locations; powerful but psychologically draining.
Baalin's connection to the Force is emotionally charged, adaptive, and deeply personal. He’s strongest when guided by empathy - weakest when suppressing it. His power lies not in domination or purity, but in understanding both sides of the Force and walking the thin line between them.

Strengths
  • Warrior Physiology - Being a Kage, he has prodigious athleticism, lightning-fast reflexes, and martial upbringing, as well as lowlight vision.
  • Emotional Awareness - Deep empathy allows him to connect with others’ pain and motivations, making him an exceptional negotiator and ally.
  • Resilience - Surviving trauma and isolation forged powerful inner strength; he adapts quickly and endures hardship without losing focus.
  • Stealth and Subtlety - Years of hiding taught him to move unseen; his Force concealment abilities make him an excellent scout or infiltrator.
  • Instinctive Force Sensitivity - His natural attunement to the Living Force gives him insight that others often miss.
  • Balanced Curiosity - Baalin has curiosity for both the light and dark aspects of the Force, seeking understanding rather than blind obedience.
Weaknesses
  • Repressed Anger - Though controlled, his buried rage can surge when he witnesses injustice or loss, clouding his judgment.
  • Attachment Issues - His fear of losing people again makes him overprotective, sometimes reckless in defense of others.
  • Defiance Toward Authority - Baalin often challenges Jedi orthodoxy, believing compassion and passion can coexist - a belief not all Masters share.
  • Guilt and Survivor’s Burden - He carries constant guilt for escaping Quarzite when his family didn't, leading to self-doubt and sleepless nights.
  • Shadow Affinity - His natural comfort within the darker aspects of the Force can draw unwanted attention - and temptation.
  • Echoes Overwhelm - Prolonged use of Force Echo can cause hallucinations or emotional bleed-through from the dead.

Equipment
  • Training Lightsaber
  • Jedi Robes
  • Jedi Utility Belt
  • Obsidian shard, on necklace string
