Description: While the Protectorate Navy has been successively updated as conflicts broke out, as ships were broken and made, one general flaw has remained over the months. While the Protectorate possesses a varied fleet, the vast majority of its capital ships are 'light' capital ships, ships under the one thousand meter mark. In reviewing the latest conflict over Eriadu, it was found that while the Protectorate forces outnumbered the Fringe invasion force, the Fringe had a much higher percentage of 'heavy' capital ships, those over the one thousand meter mark. Had their coordination been more cohesive, fleet analysts believe that the fight would have been considerably different in favor of the Fringe.

As a result of this, efforts were made to design additional heavy capital ships. The Antilles-class is one such ship born from the program. Plated with two meters Protectorate Navy standard Durasteel-Titanium armor plating, the Antilles is designed to be a ship to lead from the front-lines and is equipped with a powerful, varied armament to help it do just that. It's primary weapon comes in the form of sixty-five dual heavy turbolasers. These powerful guns are backed up with thirty-five quad ion cannon turrets, and twenty cluster missile pods. These cluster missile pods, affectionately named 'Party Poppers' are designed for very close range combat. While not possessing the fire power necessary to punch through a capital ship's shields, they're volleyed between ion cannon volleys to make up for this fact.

The most terrifying weapon of the ship though comes in the form of two barrels that run eighty percent the length of the ship. These two hypervelocity guns are rated to accelerate a twenty-six hundred metric ton slug to roughly point-five percent of light speed. Advanced targeting computers calculate optimal firing solutions and ensure that the round hits an enemy ship and not a friendly ship.

For defense, the Antilles is equipped with an equal spread of quad laser cannon turrets and flak cannons, with a number of point defense turrets as well. While these are enough to fend off average fighter and bomber attacks, the Antilles-class requires escort ships to help fend off more focused attacks.

All the weapons are placed around the outside hull frame and faced forward, with the ion cannons, quad laser cannons, and point defense guns are placed on 360° rotating turrets capable of 70° elevation. This gives the ship terrifying, forward firepower but leaves it considerably vulnerable to flanking maneuvers. Besides the noted limitations on the turrets, the ship has another drawback.

The spinal nature of the two hypervelocity guns requires that the ship adjust its entire length to target an enemy. This makes it ineffective against all but the largest of capital ships like itself or stationary targets. As well, the power drain is severe enough that, without the capacitors in place to regulate the power draw, one volley would put the ship offline for forty-one seconds. Although the capacitors prevent this, the slow recharge means that it takes ninety-eight seconds to achieve minimal power to fire, a full three hundred seconds for an optimal charge. As well, the firing of these two guns briefly brings down the forward shield for point-nine-three seconds. All these details serve to make the firing of these two cannons a decision worth careful consideration.

Another potential issue comes from concentrated ion attacks. While the weapon is well shielded from potential power fluctuations, a coordinated strike, or perhaps just a lucky one, runs the risk of overloading the capacitors. The damage from this could range from simply disabling or burning out the capacitors to causing an internal explosion that could simply damage the guns or threaten the entire ship.

All these strengths and weaknesses aside, the Antilles-class is one of many new capital ships that will serve the Protectorate for many years to come.
