3X744 was never intended to be anything special, just an ordinary clone trooper mass produced as part of the war machine that was driving the Republic in the lead up to the Battle of Geonosis. It was the thick of the Clone Wars, 19 BBY. Piracy and insurgency in the Corellian Sector constrained military and medical supplies. The veteran Jedi military strategist of the Yinchorri Uprising, General [member="Sor-Jan Xantha"], had been tasked with establishing total space superiority throughout the Corellian Sector in order to eliminate piracy as well as command of the 432nd Marine Expeditionary Force to quell the Separatist insurrection on Corellia and Drall.
That is to say, the Jedi Council recognized that the situation on Corellia needed to be addressed but didn’t have anyone else available for the job. With the loss of 200 Jedi on Geonosis, the veteran knights were engaging Separatist forces directly. As good a strategist as General Xantha was, there was an obvious problem in getting the clone troopers to accept and relate to the boy-general. But, be that as it may, General Xantha was presented with command of the Star Destroyer Sentinel and the 432nd Clone Expeditionary Unit, under the command of CC-3X197 -- otherwise known as Commander Kyle.
3X744 wasn't a part of either the Sentinel or the 432nd Clone Expeditionary Unit. He was part of a Clone Youth Brigade from Kamino that was touring the Sentinel and observing the 432nd for training purposes. They were present at the Second Battle of Corellia, when General Xantha clashed with the droid armies of the Separatists outside of Coronet.
The Sentinel was en route to Kamino to drop off the Clone Youth Brigade. Dropping out of hyperspace to verify their navigational coordinates, the ship received a transmission from the Jedi Order informing General Xantha of the deaths of Count Dooku and General Grievous. At the same time, Commander Kyle received a transmission from the Galactic Senate. That transmission contained only three words. "Execute Order Sixty-Six."
Confused at the behavior of the other clones, and their sudden aggression toward the Jedi and other Republic personnel aboard the ship, Three made the difficult decision to rebel in the belief that something was wrong with his fellow clones. He unknowingly played a part in smuggling General Xantha off the Sentinel, and then became stranded with him in 844 ABY when the pair made a blind hyperspace jump to escape their former comrades.
After the cruiser they stole crash landed on Lothal, Three -- critically injured in the crash -- became the sole survivor other than General Xantha. Placed in stasis within a bacta tank, Three was slowly nursed back to health while General Xantha ventured out to find new transportation for them. After swindling a man out of a YT-2400 light freighter in a game of Sabaac, Three left Lothal with the Jedi.
And has been traveling with him since.
