Bathed in the glow of blue, from the gold box is the figure of a familiar Jedi Master, Coren Starchaser.

When most look at the Kyber Crystals, what do they see? To most, they see the core of a lightsaber, a glowing weapon that can be at times a symbol of hope, if used by a follower of the light, or a symbol of dread, if used by those who follow a darker path. I use the terms light and dark here, because in my travels it appears to be that there are more than just the Jedi and the Sith who understand the uses of Kyber. The stones have a mystical property, and some, self included, would call them part of the Core to being a Jedi. The same way Beskar is to a Mandalorian, or even cortosis tends to be seen to the Jensaarai, though I know my friend Veino Garn will probably have some way to correct me on that.

Or the way starships are to being a Starchaser, ha, but I digress.

Kyber, it was held in the city of Jedah, and turned into a weapon from the Empire. It was held on Ilum, and was again, turned into a weapon. It can be a violent crystal, but it is more than just a crystal. Kyber are alive in the Force. Anyone who has reached that step in their training, finding their crystal, know that they sing, you can feel and hear them in the Force. They’re alive, and they bond with the Jedi. And we primarily turn them into a symbol of our Order, our station. The lightsaber.

An odd weapon, but one that can represent the dark or the light. It can be seen as a threatening weapon, capable of untold destruction, melting many metals, and carving through flesh, or being seen as a shield, able to deflect many forms of blaster technology, and disable weaponry of war. The Master Obi-Wan Kenobi said they were elegant weapons, for a more civilized age. And yet, the are at the same time, able to accomplish tasks without ever being lit.

Through my travels, I’ve also seen an interesting quote, of the symbology of a lightsaber. The weapon itself is a paradox. It is a blade that is round, it has no edge, but being made of the plasma energy it is, being a lightsaber, it is nothing but edge, no part of the blade doesn’t cut. I think it was a Force Master by the name of Vergere who said this, but… right now it doesn’t matter.

As I traveled, the kyber crystal, or some cousin of them, appear across many worlds, in countless traditions that follow the Force. They are living and can carry messages, as the one living within this holocron does, but they also can assist their partner. I want to use ‘bonded partner’ here, as when Kyber bonds to a Force user, it doesn’t feel quite right in the hands of another. Have you used someone else’s lightsaber? It doesn’t feel as warm as yours, does it? But on that same note, there are many Jedi, who lose their lightsaber or lose their crystal, and are able to bond with another, or multiple. Maybe bonded pair isn’t correct… Right, track.

There appear be as many Force traditions in the galaxy as there are habitable systems, maybe even more. Kyber, and its cousins, may be able to assist the Jedi in ways beyond that of a lightsaber, I’ve seen them used to pass messages, and lessons, and to offer protection, or some other boon to those who wield them. They can be the weapon, or the focus, the chisel or the stone, the instrument, or the note.

I have realized it is easier to work on imbuing something while using Kyber to help focus my intention…
