After a coup d'etat years ago, Julius Loghain seized the throne of Kuat becoming a Lord Regent to lead the world until it stabilizes. However, this was a mere pretext for holding emergency powers indefinitely. Supported by Imperial resources, the separatists led by Loghain secede from the Alliance triggering a worldwide civil war between them and the loyalists. The secession fails but not before throwing the Alliance and the Empire in a fiery clash above the Kuati Drive Yards. Tentative peace is negotiated.

The cause for the explosion remains a mystery, a sect of extremist secessionists claim responsibility.

After an intense and full of veiled threats negotiations, the Alliance and the Empire strike a tentative peaceful resolution to the Crisis. The Imperial forces depart Alliance space but tensions remain high and the question of hostilities rising again is not a matter of if but of when.

Elane of Kuat, the rightful heir of the Kuati throne and leader of the loyalist faction in the Crisis is killed in a firefight at a supporter's rally. With the Lady of Iron dead and the Ten previously purged by Loghain during the Night of the Guillotine, the Kuati throne is in jeopardy.

With Kuat Drive Yards undergoing a turbulent change in leadership and due to extensive damage, both the New imperials and the Alliance are forced to look elsewhere for the construction of their Navies. A number of Imperial ships docked on the rings have disappeared during the upheaval.
